MEMO to YMCA Management

May, 1999

From:The undersigned members
Subject:Misused squash facility

The undersigned members would like to draw your attention to a problem that is impeding our enjoyment of Club facilities.

We have a limited number of squash courts. The available courts are in heavy use; it is not unusual for them all to be in use as late as 9:00 PM. This means that members who would like to use a squash court are often unable to find one.

We therefore question why one of the squash courts has been made unavailable for squash and is used for golf instead. We request that YMCA management review this situation in light of the following considerations:

  • The construction of a squash court is a costly investment. Club members are not getting the intended benefits of this investment.

  • Squash courts that are used for squash require almost zero maintenance.

  • Many of the members who cannot find a free squash court when they would like are paying a squash membership premium.

  • We observe that little use is made of the court that has been turned over to golf. There is often only one person there, or no one at all.

We would be grateful if this issue could be addressed in the near future.
